DRY - Miguel Starcevich

There’s a spot in the desert where I used to ride motorcycles when I was 16. I’ve been wanting to shoot there for over 20 years, driven by it at least 50 times. I was shooting my first male nude for a portrait and I decided to take him out there and I got inspired to do a whole series. I photographed these guys the same way I typically shoot my female nudes: strong, stoic, black and white. To me, the photos are foremost about the composition, the location—Palm Springs, the landscape; I set these statuesque guys in line with the stunning background. I saw them as these large Greek gods. Most of the models had never been photographed nude, which gave them a vulnerability and a rawness. I love the brazen masculinity of it all. This work is about aesthetics, power and nature. — MS
